The Hills are Alive

July 12, 2017

Here is your complete 'The Sound of Music' guide to the breathtaking city of Salzburg.

Residenzplatz Square – Beginning your musical tour of Salzburg in the beautiful main square perfectly sets the scene for hopeful Maria’s and von Trapp children alike.

St. Peter’s Monastery – From here, if you walk away from the river you will soon reach the Monastery. Here, the pivotal and intense hiding scene is set. It is a particularly eerie and moving setting with graves and catacombs set amongst the cliff side.

Nonnberg Priory – Continuing further up the mountainside, with an expansive view out over the city is the convent and it is impossible to miss the iconic gates. J and I sat outside under a beautiful blossom tree next to an elderly women and just enjoyed the sparrows flying around above us. A few moments later, she walked inside convent as the bells rang out and the gates were closed for the evening. It was an incredibly peaceful place to absorb the beauty of the surrounds.

Summer Riding School (Felsenreitschule) – This historic stage is built directly into the Mönchsberg rock. Make sure to book a tour as you can only visit with a guide. (Also be sure to stop by the Karajan Square and the famous Horse Fountain, it was my favourite fountain).

Mirabell Gardens – This is an absolute must and just way too much fun to miss! Whether its marching along the fountain edge or running up the vine-covered archways this is the place to let your ‘Doe a deer’ out.

Untersberg – This spot is a well worth the 20km trip out of Salzburg. While catching the gondola up to the summit of the mountain we quickly realized the high altitude meant that there was a lot of unexpected snow from the long over, winter. Determined to not let this prevent us from seeing the passage that the von Trapp family took to escape Austria, we headed along the icy covered path (in our Nike’s!). The view was absolutely breathtaking and made the journey one I would always remember for more than just almost slipping off the edge of the sky high pathway.

Other locations to visit include the Schloss Leopoldskron, St Michael’s Basilica and Schloss Hellbrunn.

The Salzburg Card was the perfect way to not only gain entrance into many sites but also to get around the city and to less central locations such as the Untersberg.

Whether you are a die hard fan or can’t finish the line to ‘The Hills are alive with …” these sites are magical and mesmerizing in their own right.
