Winter Weekend Escape

In the depths of winter, J and I drove down to the beautiful Southern Highlands (Bowral), about 2 hours south of Sydney. He had surprised me with a little weekend away at the luxurious Milton Park Country House Hotel and Spa. We stopped at Berrima on our way and had delicious Devonshire Tea at The Magpie Cafe. 

 

 

We arrived early in the afternoon to the converted 20th Century Mansion set on a hilltop with stunning views over the surrounding farmland.

 

 

After checking in we were delightfully surprised to be upgraded to a ‘Forest Suite’ room.

 

 

 

We couldn’t have been happier with the cozy shabby chic style throughout the suite and the roaring open fireplace welcoming us into the lounge.

 

 

 

We couldn’t wait to explore the grounds of the estate, so curling up with my Nicholas Sparks novel (The Choice) in front of our fireplace among the trees was going to have to wait.

 

 

 

 

 

The path from the hotel took us over the beautifully manicured lawns, under a few mystical maple trees and into a French garden with a central water fountain.

 

 

 

 

 

 

J and I could have sat there quietly all day in the sun just soaking up the calmness of the surrounds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But a little vined walkway was beckoning to us.

 

 

I couldn’t help but think of The Secret Garden (one of my favourite childhood movies!) and wonder if we would spot Mary on the other side of the gate. 

 

 

 

No Mary, but we did find the perfect place to land your helicopter!

 

 

 

 

It was time to head back and get the R&R started. J and I are water-babies through and through so the pool was our first stop but the sauna was perfect for warming up again before dinner!

 

 

 

 

On a recommendation of a friend we headed to Biota and were not disappointed. We had the most delicious ‘farm to plate’ experience and were astonished by the amazing flavors achieved in the dishes. Our favourite was the baby leeks in kelp butter. My elderflower spritz was also to die for!

 

 

We are definitely heading back down to Bowral in the next few weeks to try some more amazing dishes from the chefs at Biota.

 

It was time to rest our weary heads on the plush pillows of our four-poster bed. We woke in the morning to the peaceful sound of native birds outside on our balcony.

 

 

The weather was perfect today and we enjoyed our a la Carte breakfast in the Orangerie over looking the gardens and pool.

 

 

 

 

 

After a quick game of tennis we reluctantly packed our bags and headed back, recharged and ready for another busy week at work.
